The N54 engine features two deflection pulleys, with this being the upper one situated beside the tensioner. This pulley houses bearings that, when worn, can cause screeching or rumbling noises. Regular inspection and replacement are crucial. Manual rotation of the pulley may reveal grinding, rumbling, or resistance, all signs of faulty bearings. The plastic pulley wheel can crack, snap, and fly around the engine compartment, potentially damaging the radiator, hoses, fan, and other critical components.
